Student Life at Abbey Road Institute Johannesburg

We are so excited about everything that has been happening at Abbey Road Institute Johannesburg, we kicked off our first months with a bang. Masterclasses and workshops are part of our 1 year apprenticeship-style Advanced Programme in Music Production and Sound Engineering, and the lecturers are astounding… to date they included:

HIGHLIGHTS from our Online lectures:

Adam Tudhope and Beth Warren from “Everybody’s” (Mumford & Sons, Keane, Gretta Ray, Jack Garratt and many more.) – They chatted with the students about all things music business and artist management and shared so much insight into what makes artist management such an important part of the music industry. Some advise that just hit home was… decide who you are as an artist, find yourself and know the message you want to be sharing at this time of your life. Share your music with trusted close friends and family to get feedback and keep refining… good music and good songs always finds a way to be heard!

Mirek Stiles, Head Of Audio Products at Abbey Road Studios – Mirek talked about the history of spatial audio at Abbey Road and explored the new generation of spatial audio with the students, in particular the Unity game engine. He showed them how they can create ‘6 degrees of freedom’ experiences, using game engines like Unity to present music in new and exciting ways.

Eric Horstmann, Regional Business Development Manager for Genelec and owner of Immersive Sound Lab. Eric introduced our students to various Immersive Sound Formats including Dolby Atmos and Auro3D. He took them through a presentation of the basic setups needed for Immersive sound mixing and shared some invaluable information on setting up Immersive sound workflows.

Ugis Kampars, Partner Account Manager at Sonarworks. Ugis gave an overview of the Sonarworks room correction as well as headphone calibration software.

Tim Lengfeld, award-winning mastering engineer and owner at TL Mastering. Tim talked all things mastering, introducing the students to the world after the mix, sharing some trade secrets and showing the difference between software and hardware mastering chains.

Neil Smit – Producer, Engineer, Musician, member of the Durban Philharmonic Orchestra as well as our Synthesis lecturer, offering playing technique and performance tools as part of his sampling lecture.

Winston Marshall from the multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning band Mumford and Sons popped in for a visit and chatted about the international music industry, touring life and giving a little insight into being part of such an influential group of musicians that are shaping the sound of our generation.

Tom Silverman for US based Tommy Boy Records visited us on campus as part of our global networking program introducing the students to Tracklib a brand new sample licensing platform that is transforming the way that clearance for samples, used in production is obtained.

Earlier this year we also had a chat with our Feb 2020 class after their first month on the Advanced Programme in Music Production and Sound Engineering.
